A little introduction about Black Heron Headwear. Well I grew up in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa- a region rich in wildlife, natural beauty and cultural heritage. Inspired by this environment, I wanted a brand to reflect something uniquely African. That inspiration came in the form of the remarkable Black Heron ,known in Zulu as IKUWELA.

This clever bird uses a fascinating hunting technique called Canopy Feeding ,whereby it spreads its wings into a full umbrella shape to create shade over the water ,drawing fish into the shadow where they are more visible and easier to catch. Its a brilliant example of nature using shade as a tool and it sparked the idea behind our brand.

At Black Heron Headwear we believe in the power of shade as protection .Our tagline ''much more shade and time to play '' speaks the importance of enjoying life outdoors while staying protected from the suns harmful effects.

Excessive sun exposure is a leading cause of Basel Cell Carcinoma(BCC) I have had over 16 removed ,they were treatable requiring medical intervention ,recovery time and lifestyle disruption to daily life .That's why sun -smart habits including our hats are essential for prevention .

I am now based in the UK and I get it ,I know what the winters are like and the need ,the craving for sunshine when it does emerge but I have seen some people really overdo it and get terribly burnt so please be sun smart .
